A magic weekend at Race Tekapo! Always amazing catching up with friends on start lines (and finish lines), especially in places as spectacular as this. Unbeatable vibes. Hearing those bagpipes at dawn resonating beautifully across the waters as the 50kers get underway… we stand in the dark, shivering and listening – they me every year!
Four out of five from our family were entered for Race Tekapo in our third year at this event. Miss H (14) joining me for her first ever race, the 5k; Nath down for the 12km; and Lee taking on the 32km for a second time (his favourite distance and course). The plan, with generously spaced out start times, was that Lee would run his race at a fairly easy effort, then 40ish minutes later back it up by running the 12km course to accompany Nathan (12). Fortunately Nath did not ‘need’ a chaperone in his first year here as an age qualified competitor. Plan A out the window when Dad got thoroughly caught up in a speedy field and set a hot wee pace out the gate. He finished absolutely stuffed and utterly unenthused about heading up and over Mt John again! Kudos to Nath for adapting last minute and running his first solo race. And finishing 2nd in the Under 18s!!
In what was supposed to be my second month post surgery (for a torn meniscus, a surgery I cancelled at the very last minute) I’d entered the 5k purely for participation and had every intention of walking it with my girl… But, just before our start, Dad with a bit of energy regained, offered to step in so I could at least run some or all of it. It wasn’t fast, or super comfortable, but it was nice to add a 5km Race Tekapo medal to my 12 and 21. Maybe one day I’ll have the full set.
Can we make it 5 from 5 (and injury free) in 2025? #TeamWebber
Congratulations everyone, some epic achievements and outstanding running.
